Language and Register understanding

Understanding of Language and Register
Language and register is how the article is received by the audience and how the language choices affect meaning, also if the language is suitable for the target audience. This includes the Level of formality, use of slang/standard english, spelling, punctuation, paragraphs, upper/lower case letters, sentences and colloquials.

Spelling is important throughout the article because the reader needs to be able to read the text clearly without spelling mistakes, otherwise the reader may get confused and put the magazine down.
Another part of language is punctuation, this is important because it emphasis the text, it also creates pauses or makes the text faster. The punctuation can involve, full stops, commas, colons, semi-colons, brackets, exclamation marks and question marks.
Paragraphs are very important in an article this signifies to the readers that a new section to the article is starting. They help space out the article so it isn't all cramped together.
Upper/Lower case letters attract the reader. Upper case letters will draw the reader in because they will see what the article is about, whereas the Lower case letters will hold the valid information about the artist or band.
There are various sentences that can be used through the article, these are Complex, Short and Compound. Also within the sentences the writer can use Statements, Imperatives, Questions, Superlatives and Tone. These all add effects to the text which inspire and interest the reader.
Finally the writer will focus on Formality and Colloquials, these attract the reader depending on the target audience, for example if the audience was teenagers then the writer would throw in a lot of slang and make it informal, however for a more educated audience, the writer will make the article formal and without slang, involving difficult words, such as 'fruition'.

DPS Language Analysis

The DPS that we did our analysation on was Metal Hammer, this typical rock/metal magazine is ultimately targeted to a young audience, however the DPS was targeted at a higher educated mature audience.

This formal piece of writing is ideal for this type of audience because they are expecting a higher formality of text. 'Indeed, while the formula of a concept album', this example shows how much etiquette has been placed in this article. Another part to this article is how difficult the writing is, for example, 'Preconceived' and 'Fruition' these words are difficult to pronounce, this shows how difficult the writers have made this, this is suitable for there target audience. This is weird because Metal Hammer usually target this magazine at a younger teenage audience instead of a sophisticated audience. In this article we have found evidence of alliteration, 'Darkly Devious Dani', this a great example for alliteration since this is the main title of the article. i Another feature to this article is the grammar, the whole article is grammatically correct, 'Dani is exhibiting more than a few stereotypical female tendencies himself;' this shows that the whole article is showing perfect grammar.

Institutional Research (Josh)

Institutional Research

Bauer Media is a Publishing Corporation, involved in over 300 magazines covering Music, Films and News. This Company supports so many magazines that they are a liable choice to Produce my Music Magazine, as they publish similar products, like Q, Kerrang and Mojo. These are all music magazines which are popular among the public because of this Bauer Media might not propduce my magazine because there are to many others like it. However i believe my magazine is different to the others they produce. My magazine is Pop related, where as the other magazines all have genres of Rock and Indy this will help Bauer Media bring in another audience which my magazine will appeal to. To help pull in this new audience i have filled my magazine with not only the latest charts but classic pop music so the audience will have a variety of age. This is a main focus of my magazine! The only worry about Bauer Media is the fact they have never produced a music magazine like this before, therefore it is out of there comfort zone and they may not be willing to produce it. However i have took into consideration of what other companies will be candidates to produce my magazine. I have discovered that Smuggler and The Magazine Production Company will be suitable to produce my magazine.

Similar Product Research contents page

Similar Product Research- Contents page

This contents page is from Q magazine, particularly the 267th issue. This contents page is cluttered with information, the reader won't know where to begin. Q have used the colours red, white and black to keep with their house style. The font is formal towards the reader this is used on every bit of text. This contents page is simple, there are only two pictures and one takes up half of the page. I would not have a contents page similar to this because this is far to cluttered and only uses two pictures, where as I would have more pictures to give more of a preview to the contents. Another part i would alter is, the font size and style, i would want to make it appeal to my target audience, also to make it clear so they can read it without any issues. Finally i would change the colours to suit my house style, so instead of red and black i would have yellow and black or maybe even orange, if i was having a Christmas edition i would choose red and white.

Josh's similar product research- front covers

Similar Product Research
This is the 25th anniversary collectors edition of Q magazine, as it is a special edition there is not much information on the front cover because they are focusing on the main story of the magazine. There is quite a lot of white space on the particular front cover but this draws more attention to the main picture of Noel Gallagher. There is a certain font style used to make this front cover informal to the reader, this is used on the section about the artists. This magazine has dressed Noel in a blue shirt to match the puffs that are on this front cover. The main font of Noel's name clashes with his blue shirt, therefore it does not jump out at the reader. However the main masthead contrasts with the blue and yellow puffs because they are primary colours. The front cover would intrigue people because there is a list of famous artists that are popular among the public, although they have only used one artist for the main part of the front cover, the readers will want to know more about the other artists, therefore buying this magazine.

Josh's evaluation of what i have learnt so far.

Evaluation
Over the Duration of this course i have learnt new skills, these skills have helped me develop my work further throughout the course.
The main skill i have learnt is how to use the Macs for media purposes. I know how to create a file in Adobe and customise it to my ideas for a magazine. I can change the effects on titles to make it less original. Another skill i have learnt is how to use the programs on the mac. I have learnt new terms during this media course, such as Masthead. A masthead is the name and logo of a magazine. Another term i have learnt is the Lead. The Lead is the introductory paragraph of an article.

Overall i have learnt new skills which will benefit me through the media course.

Initial ideas for magazine's

Initial ideas by Josh only, as Jack has left the subject.

Initial Ideas
Name: Loud       Slogan: Turn it up

I have chose this name because it relates to music as does the slogan. This masthead will be in a bright yellow font so it stands out against the black background, also the colours will jump out at the chosen audience because the colours contrast.

Main Colour: Black and Yellow

I have chosen these colours for my July issue because the Black in the background is the house style of my magazine, where as the yellow contrasts against it. These colours will appeal towards the targeted audience.

Genre: Chart music, Pop and RnB

I have chosen this genre because this style of music has many fans and listeners.

Cover Stories: New release's in the top 40, Number 1's, Competitions, new albums and information on artists

I have chosen these cover stories because it relates to the genre, also it gives the reader enough information every issue.

Freebies: Samples of new music

I have chosen to throw in a freebie because it will tempt the target audience more.

Images: Double page spread with an image of the artist.

The image on the double page must stand out and look good, but the background and clothing should not cover up the colour of font i am using.

Josh's Front cover

Preliminary Task Front Cover

Annotations of my front cover.

For my front cover, I have used a plain font so its easy to read, also I have chose the colour red because it stands out against the background of this magazine.

If I could change any part of this magazine cover, I would change the text on the model because it does not jump out at the reader. It is hard to read against the background.

Also I would enlarge all the texts to make them easier to read.

I have used this picture because it is a decent medium close up and the background is suitable.

For the cover stories I would enlarge each of the texts, this way they will be easier to read, and they will catch the readers eye.
